GOVERNOR WELD FOR NEW ZEALAND.

It will be observed by the paragraph which we append that the Lyttelton Times has given expression to the rumor which gained currency shortly after the arrival of the late mail from England, that Governor Weld was likely to be named for New Zealand when the term of office of His Excellency Sir George Bowen has expired : —“ It is stated in letters from home that, whichever of the two great parties may be in power, Mr. Weld will most probably be nominated to the governorship of New Zealand when Sir George Bowen’s term of office shall have expired. It is satisfactory to think that some opinions may be springing up at home in favor of practically recognising the fitness of old colonists, who have distinguished themselves in colonial public life, and are thoroughly conversant with colonial affairs, to exercise the functions of Governor—functions which those selected from among the ranks of the House of Commons, or of the English gentry, do not always fulfil with any very great amount of ability or judgment. We are sure our readers will be glad to hear of the good fortune which has befallen a very gallant, brave gentleman. We could have wished him a better place of abode, and more congenial society, but these will come in the ordinary course of promotion. It is stated that Lieutenant Pauli, lately Resident Magistrate for Leithfield and Kaiapoi, accompanies Mr. F. A. Weld -to Western Australia, as private secretary.”—Auckland Weekly News.
