Napier telegrams of yesterday state that a Cavalry escort of 10 troopers was left by Major St. John at a place about 7 miles from Taupo while he went to reconnoitre. On returning two days after, he found nine of their bodies stripped, but not mutilatsd, having apparently been sui prised. Lieut. Ross, and Ensign Lawson were among those killed. Shortly afterwards St. John received a letter couched in terms of bravado, signed “Te Kooti,” but the Government do not believe it to be genuine. ■ There was a tremendous Fire at Greymouth this morning. The Union Bank, Bank of New South Wales, Bank ot Australasia, stores, houses, bonded warehouses are destroyed. The damages are computed at sixty thousand pounds !

Wellington, 5-30 p.m. The Correspondent of the Post says : A most destructive fire broke out 3 o’clock this morning in Johnston’s Melbourne Hotel, Greymouth. The Hanks of New South Wales, Union, and Australasia, were completely destroyed and burnt down. Hannery’s and the Melbourne Hotels were also consumed, as well as the residence of Perkins, barrister; premises of Trest, blacksmith ; Thadger, painter ; Bi-oadbent jeweller ; Hamilton, merchant; Nidi oil, do.; Thompson, smith; Bax-kley, draper; Morris Levy, ironmonger : Forsyth and Masters, do.; Hunter, tobacconist; Clark’s Masonic Motel; Bank Hotel, and several other buildings were gutted. The damage is estimated at £60,000.
