SEVERE EARTHQUAKE IN CANTERBURY.

Teeegrams dated Christchurch, June 7th, in the Examiner say ;—There was a severe shock of earthquake here at 8 o’clock on Saturday morning. It was the most severe that has been experienced in this province. Chimneys have been thrown down in all directions, and much damage has been done to stone and brick buildings. One brick house was shaken to the ground, tumbling, down altogether. The tower of St. John’s Church was rent from top to bottom, and the Government buildings are nqucb damaged. No damage has been done to the railway tunnel, and no serious injury has happened to persons. Several minor shocks have been felt since Saturday morning. Another account adds that the wave came from an easterly direction and passing across the island, was felt severely at Hokitika.
