"EXPRESS” TELEGRAMS.
(From our own Correspondent). Wellington, Friday, 6 p.m. Colonel Whitmore surprised a pa 80 miles from Tauranga, on the 6th. Killed 7 rebels, and took the women and children prisoners. Mr. Fitzherbert addressed the Hntt constituents on Wednesday. He insisted on four propositions : the suppression of the Native Rebellion, unhesitatingly, and measures taken with spirit. It was vain to petition the Imperial Government for troops. It was our duty to occupy the confiscated land. The. Imperial Government expressed willingness to guarantee a loan for War and Emigration, if it became satisfied that the Colony was doing its duty. Mr. Gillies’ station, in the Wairarapa,—s,ooo acres, greater part fenced and ploughed, with 20 years’ improvements—has been sold for -£SOOO. The sheep, not clean, 4d. per head. Dr Featherston returned last night from Waikanae. The natives have finally agreed to offer no opposition to the telegraph ; afterwards it was agreed that they should supply and erect a portion of the poles.
