Resident Magistrate's Court.

BLENHEIM, MONDAY, MAY 10. [Before S. L. Muller, Esq., R.M.] LEWIS V. MILLER. The defendant did not appear, Lewis Lewis, mail contractor, deposed that on the Ist February he obtained judgment in this Court against defendant for £3 Bs. 6d., with 14s. costs, which sum had not since been paid, nor any part thereof. The defendant lived in Picton, and had been working there in the interim. During the time he had been away for a fortnight to the He believed he could have paid it since the judgment. The Bench remarked upon the non-ap-pearance of defendant, who was ordered to be committed to Picton Jail for one month. Should the money be paid before that time, he could be set at liberty. The Bench called the attention of the Press to the nature of this case, remarking that it did not seem to be commonly known that persons could be committed to jail for contempt in not appearing to show cause when summoned.
