LOCAL PRODUCTIVE INDUSTRY
To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sir, —More than a year ago Mr. Rayner wrote to his brother in Yorkshire to enquire the cost of wool-weaving machinery, and has given me a copy of his reply, which I enclose. The machinery he refers to is of the most perfect description, and of course the cost is commensurate. lam anxious to see something of the kind introduced here, and perhaps some more economical machinery might suffice for the first attempt. Valuable information on this point might be obtained in Nelson, where an excellent cloth is made—might not flannel, Crimean shirting, and blankets be eventually introduced ?—I am, &c., W. Budge. P.S.—There is abundant water power on Mr. Rigby’s land. [extract.] “ Respecting. the machinery, a condenser, including billy, scribbler, slubber, and carder, with mules and power looms to follow, as far as I can ascertain will cost about £IOOO. The condensing machine draws out and feeds itself; the billy, slubber, and mules draw out and put up themselves ; so that manual labor is almost out of the question.”
