The-lowest, tender, for the new Government House is by a Dunedin firm, £12,000, - Itis much above.the architect’s estimate, and the specificatqph is being materially modified to reduce the cost. The Melbourne mail service will be via Hokitika or the Bluff, but cannot be decided until the expected letters from the A.S.N. Co. are received. The Duke of Edinbufgh-is not expected to arrive before the middle of April, on account of the Galatea requiring docking. Further information expected per Euahine, momentarily due.

The Ruahine will sail for England oh Monday night, full of passengers. The Wellington Provincial Council have re-i jected Pharazyn’s amendment, viz. : —“ That this Council cannot agree with his Honor that this* Island can only be recovered from ruin by an entire reversal of the Self-reliance Policy.” The original clause was carried in proposed reply, affirming that our disasters are mainly attributable to the withdrawal of the Imperial Troops, without any adequate provision having been made to supply their place by a local force. The St. Kilda has arrived from the East Coast to-day with a number of Ngatiporous on board for Wanganui. Te Kooti is said to be surrounded by Major Mair.

Tauranga is so threatened that all the women and children have been sent to Auckland.

A despatch from Whitmore, to-day, states that the other day Titokowaru’s force was again nearly surrounded, but rebel scouts discovered the design and gave the alarm. There are some rumours about a fight at Manawatu.

Taranaki is quiet. Colonel Gorton, who rode from Patea with Whitmore, reached New Plymouth in safety. The new Colonial order of valour has been granted to Kega for gallant conduct at Moturoa in November, 18GS, and to Constables Blake and Biddle at Ngatapa in January last.
