They contemplate visiting Denmark. The Prince of Wales refused to join the Order of Freemasons. The Duke of Edinburgh assumed the command of the Galatea ; was to sail in November, and return in 1870. Six months’ pay awarded to the soldiers and sailors engaged in the Abyssinian expedition, Jefferson Davis resides in London. The Dean of Cork appointed Bishop of Peterborough. Gladstone a sufferer from English cholera but recovering. Expected Liberal majority in the new Parliament, 136 j most of the Liberal candidates in favor of the ballot.

Ho mseopatby prohibited in Russia, owing to the many deaths which occurred under the system. The Panama Company held a meeting on the Bth October, to consider the advisability of winding up the Company. Lord Claude Hamilton was in the chair. He stated that remittances amounted to £20,000 less for the last four months than the same period in 1867. Passenger traffic was in the local lines less profitable, and acceptances had been returned dishonored. After a discussion, it was agreed to appoint a committee to consider the position of the company, and consult the creditors. A subsequent meeting was held, when it was resolved that the Company should continue under a new directory. Money plentiful. Dr, Livingstone is announced to be within nine weeks’ march of Zanzibar. A suit has been commenced in the D.S. by the owners of the Sonora against Mr. Laird, builder of the Alabama, for damages amounting to 119,000 dollars.
A Quakeress was. lined in Manchestei for pressing her claim to vote. A conspiracy has been discovered in Constantinople to assassinate the Sultan. Alderman Lawrence has been elected Lord Mayor of London. Anthony Trollope opposes Lord Stanley. The Emperor of France visited the camp at Chalons, and made a pacific speech. Eighty thousand soldiers are to be furloughed. Public anxiety in France respecting war much lessened.
The King of Prussia has been visiting the Duchies. At Hamburg he said ; “ What you all want, we all want—peace.” He entertained confident hopes that peace would not be disturbed. Bismarck has recovered his health, and will soon resume his duties.
