(From our Own Correspondent.) Retirement of Mr. HallSpeedy end to the Panama Contract, Road Boards Bill thrown out. Approaching Close of the Session. Latest from Front—Another Man Missing. Wellington, Friday evening, October 16th, 1868. Last night, Mr. Stafford announced in the Assembly that continued ill-health compelled Mr. J. Hall’s retirement from office at the close of the Session. Mr. Clark tabled a motion for arranging with Captain Vine Hall for the speedy termination of the Panama Mail Contract, afterwards withdi'ew it, in consequence of the unanimous opposition of the members. The Legislative Council have thrown out the Road Hoards Hill, after half-an-hour’s debate, with sevei’al others, on account of the lat ness of the session. • Colonel i. laid tain is still at the Front.
Colonel Whitmore is awaiting his return before accepting the command of the colonial forces at i'atea. The rebels tire on the Kakaramea redoubt daily. . Mr. M‘Uullagh, who left Patea to look for his sheep, has been missing several days ; his dog has now returned without him. Telegrams from Napier say that the Chatham Island prisoners are preparing mischief. A motion, that the next session of the Assembly should be held at Christchurch or Nelson, was lost by 22 to 12.
