THE TIDAL WAVE AT THE CHATHAMS.
We take the following from an Extra of the Evening Post, published on Friday last, giving further particulars than those contained in our own Telegraphic intelligence last week : Dunedin, August 27. The schooner Rifleman arrived from the Chathams this morning. She brings news that fifteen islands have been visited by three tidal waves, causing loss of life and property at the settlement of Tupunga; the north side of the island felt the greatest force. Entirely destroyed. No mark left to tell where it stood. Ground completely covered with sand and sea-weed. The inhabitants barely escaped with their lives. The sea went inland four miles. Along the coast a house and its contents, belonging to Mr. Hay, sheep-farmer, was carried bodily to sea. Some Maoris, in trying to save a boat •which was carried out to sea, were drowned. The settlement of Waitangi sustained great loss, the houses shifted, and were carried out to sea. A large quantity of Government stores were also destroyed. The Rifleman was lying at Wangaroa, and fortunately escaped. •V' The force of the water at Tapunga smashed drays, and removed to a considerable distance stones half a ton weight.
