THE BLENHEIM BOARD OF WORKS.

To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sir, — As no steps have been taken to bring the town of Blenheim under the operation of the Municipal Corporations Act, IBG7, I would suggest to the inhabitants the advisability of meeting at the Provincial Hall at noon on the last Monday of the present month, in accordance with the Blenheim Improvement Act, to consider the advisability of electing a new Board, or to take some steps for the repair of roads, &c. When the ‘ Obstruction ’ Party passed a Resolution at the late public meeting, to have the accounts examined, I and others thought the Ratepayers had an objection to be governed any longer by the late Board, and that some other mode of improving the town would be brought forward, and their not doing so has clearly shewn that their oidy object was to stop all improvements, and the supporters of that resolution, or at least a majority of them, must be disgusted at the part they took in assisting certain interested persons in opposing the introduction of any law for the improvement of the town. As a considerable period has now elapsed, and most people have had time to look at the matter calmly, I think if the inhabitants meet and agree on some plan to alter the disgraceful state the town is in, some good may possibly spring from it, for no money for either roads or bridges appears likely to be got out of the Pauper Barracks alias the Provincial Government. For my part, 1 feel certain the Blenheim Improvement Act, with all its defects, may be worked satisfactorily if the proper men are elected to carry it out. If any agricultural land is included, that should not be. It will be easy for the Board not to pass the assessment except those lands are assessed at a nominal rate ; and if the mode of assessing is objectionable, adopt that portion only of the Municipal Act which refers to assessments, and which it is quite competent for them to do. I am, &c. Blenheim, Sept. 1. Publicola.
