“EXPRESS ”_TELEGRAMS. WELLINGTON. (From our Own Correspondent.) "Wreck of the Steamer Taranaki. Important Movements in the Assembly. Enormous Blundering in the Treasury. The Consolidation of Loans. Great Loss and Battle on the East Coast. Friday, August 21st, 8-20 p.m. Great excitement exists here respecting the wreck of the steamer Taranaki. Several Wellington firms had large ventures on board for the Auckland goldfields. The postage on newspapers is to be still retained. The numbers on the division were 33 to 22. The Defence department is to be wholly; abolished at the earliest possible date. j The Budget is promised if possible next: week. An angry debate took place yesterday, • about the accounts between Provincial and; General Governments being forthcoming. I Mr. Cuitis (1) stated that the Treasury had over-paid Nelson to 31st March, £14,000 ! Calculating the Nelson revenue on this false basis is equal to £20,000 for the current year, and having to refund over payments. Nelson had recently appropriated nearly £35,000 too much ! They had received last month’s payment before Treasury making discovery of over-payment, and have been obliged to stop contracts, <Sic., in consequence. Fitzherbert had consolidated General Government fives, £409,300 ; sixes, £916,300. Provincial Sixes, £1,493,400. There are still outstanding respectively £590,700, £733,700, and £306,600. Terms for converting provincial Sevens, Eights, and Tens are under consideration. The Rev. P. Hay Maxwell, of St. Paul’s Church, Thorndon, who has been confined to his bed for some days past, died on Wednesday last, and is to be buried tomorrow (Saturday). There is nothing new irom Patea. The loss in Major Whitmore’s force at the East Coast is five wounded, and six killed, who were left where they fell.
