THE BLENHEIM BOARD OF WORKS.
To the Editor of the Marlborough Exprest. Sie, —I attended a meeting at the Council Chambers the other day, called by Mr. Henderson, to elect three members of the Board of Works in the place of those resigned; and now for the first time we have the liabilities of the Board laid before us. .£‘l76 ! I could not but admire the cool way Mr Dodson, one of the late members, transferred the payment of these liabilities to some person or persons unknown, that was to come hereafter, but as I think is most likely, never will come. He said he trusted in the honesty and fairness of any Board to pay these debts at a future day. Now this appears to me very like a man making no effort to pay his debts while he lives, but.trusting to the integrity of his executors, or somebody else, doing so after his death ! If this is not political dishonesty, I do’nt know what is, as those persons who incurred the debts, are those who should use their best endeavors to see them paid, and point out the best way to the inhabitants—as what is everybody’s business is nobody’s. Mr. Gorrie truly said it would be a standing disgrace to the town of Blenheim, if they remain unpaid. Mr. Sinclair made another of his wait-awhile speeches, confusing everybody with his new Acts, District Roads, &c. But no one pointed out the bad state our Roads are in ! Now do we, or do we not, want our roads repairing? If we do, then any Act will suit, providing it taxes us according to our means to pay, and allows the money to be expended in roads. It is no use putting off the evil day. lam &c. Publicola. Blenheim, July 17.
