DECEMBER WAKATAU (KAIKOURA).

IN MEMORIAM. We are requested by the Natives to give publicity to the following document; but as it would be of little service in the aboriginal tongue, we append a translation, supplied by the Rev. (TRANSLATION.) Kaikoura, 9th April, 1868. This is a book of remembrance from us—from his children—informing his people whom he hath left in this world, so that they may know of the death of December Wakatau, who died in the year 1868, of our Lord Jesus Christ. When the time of his death drew near, ho said to his children, —“ Carry me outside that I may gaze upon the wide earth, upon the world of light, upon the heavens above, that I may behold my dwelling-place at Kaikoura.” As soon as he came outside, he uttered his farewell words to his children. 0 my sons, O my daughters, 0 my friends, —Farewell iu this world. lam about to leave you ; lam going to the dwellingplace that is near the life, therefore remain firm in your faith to God ; this is your salvation. “ Watch therefore, for ye know nether the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man cometh.” Farewell! my sons in this world; remain firm in your love to man after lam gone away. Be loving to the white man; they are your fathers in this world, whether they are gentlemen or poor men ; let them be loved by you. These were his last words. He closed his eyes in death. His people said, “ Depart 0 father; go up by the hands of sudden death.” This was all. His people wept over him. 0 my friends, listen to this genealogy of a certain great chief who lived at Kaikoura; December Wakatau Te Haere was bis name. These are the generations of Wakatau:— But we cannot tell the number of his ancestors, they were so numerous, because he sprung from a noble race ; all of them down to his father, even down to this great chief who is now dead.
