ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISH MAIL VIA PANAMA.

(From the Panama Star and Herald.) New York, April 9. Cable despatches report that the advance of the British army, with General Napier at its head, had reached Lake Ashangti, Abyssinia, on March 16th. Its difficulties increased as it proceeded. The country was barren and inhospitable. Theorodus has despoiled the country far and wide. Prussia has decisively refused the cession of Alsen and Duppe to Denmark. The North German Parliament has ratified and passed the American naturalization treaty. The French troops are to evacuate Rome completely at an early day. Hon, Thomas D’Arcy McGee, member of the Canadian Parliament, was assassinated on the morning of the 7th, at about two o'clock, as he was entering his lodgings. The assassin is unknown, though a man named Whelan has been arrested on suspicion. The assassination has caused the greatest excitement in Canada. In the house last night, a couple of hours before the assassination, Mr. McGee delivered an able speech on the position of Nova Scotia. It is said to have been one of the most eloquent efforts of .his whole life. A despatch from Ottawa to the Evening Telegram reports that the excitement there is still on the increase. A private meeting of the Ministers has been held in connection with leading members of the two houses. Itvis intimated that facts have been presented them showing the existence of a secret society of desperadoes sworn to summarily put out of the way all members of the Parliament who are broadly antiFenian in their sentiments. Information is also in the possession of the members to the effect that a grand Fenian outbreak throughout the Dominion is imminent. In this, it is stated, in addition to the Fenians, there will be engaged the forces of the many Canadians who are dissatisfied with Government on general grounds. It has been ascertained by the authorities that the murderer of McGee is a New York Fenian, who is said to have been detailed by the secret society for the purpose, the duty having been decided by drawing lots. It is rumoured that a French revolutionary society in the Lower Province is acting in concert with the Fenians. Threats .of retaliation upon all . known Fenians are openly made by members of the British party, and it is feared that other, assassinations will follow this evil beginning. EUROPE. England.— The . debate on the Irish Church question has been very exciting. The telegraph announces the termination of the debate and the defeat of the Ministry. London, Saturday, April 4, 3 a,m.—At 2T5 this morning the debate ended, and a division took place on Lord Stanley’s amendment to postpone the consideration of Mr. Gladstone’s resolve until ! the next Parliament. Six hundred members voted, and the Government was defeated by sixty majority. The announcement was greeted by the wild cheers of the Liberals. April s.—An important meeting of the Cabinet was held on Saturday, to consider what action should be taken in view of the vote on Friday night, on Mr. Gladstone’s resolutions. It is reported that the Ministers decided to resign in case the Opposition should obtain their large majority after the recess of Parliament, April 4,—The defeat of the Ministry in the House of Commons last evening, forms •the chief topic of conversation. Nearly all the journals have editorial articles on the subject this morning. The Times says : “The Commons have resolved that this cancer of the Empire shall be removed. The rejection of Lord Stanley’s amendment, to postpone consideration until the next Parliament, and the adoption of Mr. Gladstone’s resolution to go into committee, are merely the first steps of the operation. The national will is soon to be expressed, and it will be in no uncertain sound. It will insist that the work so happily begun, shall be thoroughly, performed. This morning’s vote is the dawn of a reunited empire. Now, Ireland may take confidence from this vote: that she is sustained by the “. ■ '

vast balance of opinion of the United Kingdom. The wrongs of ages are to be ended, and right done amid the acclamation of the nation. This must guarantee peace.” The Morning Post concludes a very able article with the following words ; —“This vote is the death warrant of the Irish Church. No fairer trophy has been won by the Liberal party since the Emancipation act of 1829.” The Standard says ;—“ The effect of this vote will be to waste the session without advancing the object proposed one single step.” April B.—lt is reported on good authority that Lord Cranboume has been tendered the office of Governor General of Canada, to succeed Lord Monck, and that Earl Mayo, now Secretary of State for Ireland, has been ofiered the Governor Generalship of India. The Grand Jury have brought bills of indictment against all the prisoners except O’Neill who were charged by the coroner’s jury with complicity in the Clerkenwell outrage, The trials will commence next week. Mr, "Whitmore, M.P., has declined the Governorship of Tasmania. New Zealand securities have been rather adversely affected by the last intelligence, but no change of importance has been actually established. The most that they amount to is.an indisposition to invest for the time. IRELAND. London, April B.—The hierarchy will soon present a petition to the Queen in person against any change in the position of revenues of the Established Church in that part of the United Kingdom. Deeds of violence against persons and property are of daily occurrence in Cork. The Right Honorable Justice Fitzgerald, Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench in Ireland, is said to be on the point of resigning his office. AFRICA. London, April B.—All doubts of the safety of Doctor Livingston, the African explorer, are now dispelled. Sir Roderick Murchison to-day received a letter from the distinguished traveller, which came by the way of Zanzibar. Doctor Livingston writes that he is in good health, that his journey of exploration has been successful and that he will, soon return to England. LONDON' WOOL SALES. The first series of London wool sales, which commenced on Feb. 27, closed on March 27. These sales mark the stopping point in the downward course, in which prices of wool have continued for the last two years. A slight rise must be chronicled, placing Australian wools about LI., Cape Id., above the level of the previous sales’ rates. The true cause of the slight advance obtainable in this series has, probably, little to do with either improvement in business or return of confidence, but may be simply explained by the brisk demand for good combing wools, which, after the scanty supplies in autumn, is always observable at this particular season of the year. The rise of Cape wools must be chiefly ascribed to the retarded shipments from Buenos Ayres. As regards the prospects for May, we must look forward to enormous .supplies, but at the same time may confidently expect a good competition from all sides, manufacturers being everywhere but poorly stocked. Trade may revive if the • weather be favorable to the ctops, and in that case the present range of prices may be maintained;
