REMOVAL OF THE CHURCH OF NATIVITY
To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sib, —As a meeting is to be held at the Council Chamber on Tuesday evening next to take into consideration the removal of the Church to a more central site, and, as our respected minister says, to set the question at rest for ever. Now, I am one of those unfortunate individuals who cannot get up at a meeting and give my opinion. I take this, perhaps, unusual course of expressing it, hoping to see a large meeting and set the question at rest for ever, and not allow Mr. Butt or anybody else to keep dragging it up until their ends are served, as it appears to me, the meaning of setting the question at rest for ever, means when they are suited, for did not the meeting a short time ago declare that the Church should not be [moved, but enlarged instead, which I think the wisest course, as I do not know of a dryer piece of land or one more suited to the purpose or as easily got at from all the town, if all the town is to be considered, or only the south. This talk about position for a Church seems to me as if there were a lot of people roaming about in search of a Church, who turn into the first place, as they do in the gin palaces. No, Sir, if the Church offers sufficient attraction in the shape of logical sermons and good reading, there is no fear of a good congrega. tion and plenty of funds to maintain the Church. —I am, &c. A Churchman-.
