TOTAL LOSS OF THE TASMANIAN MAID.
Our readers will be concerned to hear that this old favourite is now numbered among the things of the past. The p.s. Tasmanian Maid was the first steamer which entered the Wairau some ten years ago, and there are some among us who remember the time. Since that time she has been variously employed in the Nelson coasting trade. During the late war, under the name of the Sandfly, she also did excellent service, and was well known in the North. Upon the close of the war she was sold by the Government to Mr. Joseph Cochrane, who placed her on the Whangarei station. This proving an indifferent speculation, she again changed hands to a West Coast firm, who have been running her between the Bullet and Manuka harbour. She left the latter port on theJLgth instant for Westport, with a cargo consisting'mf-'SO 'tohs potatoes, 1 ton onions, and 1 ton cheese ; only two passengers were on board—Mr. W. Rogan and Mr. Patrick Connor. Off Taranaki she was overtaken by the Storm Bird, which started the following day, and at the request of Captain Souter, the. Captain of the Storm Bird (Doyle) let him have a small supply of three or four tons of coal, his supply being deficient for the journey. Shortly after the vessels had parted company, the attention of Captain Doyle was drawn to the. Tasmanian Maid by the firing of distress guns and the blowing of the steam whistle. He immediately lowered his boats, and sent them in charge of the first officer to render what assistance they could, when it was found that the steamer had struck upon a reef. The passengers, officers, and crew were conveyed to the surf boats, and the boats, returning to the wreck, were only able to take the captain off before she settled down by the stern. The reef was a little south of the anchorage. There was no sea on at the time, nor any indication of wind when Captain Doyle left, and after rendering all the assistance he could, he left for Wellington.
