A LOTTERY “SWINDLE.”

To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sir, —Such is the heading of a long virtuous letter from Mr. H. Dodson of this town, in which he shews chagrin that he has not as on some other occasions got the Chief prizes. Our worthy Confrere, Mr. Dodson, has shown at least that if he did not get more than his chance, he understands well how trickery can be perpetrated. The “Art Union ” system in confectionary is understood by all reasonable people to be one of risk as the whole or perhaps a large portion of that manufactured may never be required, if tickets are not sold—and therefore a considerable margin against risk of the kind is always allowed. Our profit, if any, has yet to be ascertained. Next week if we get in the price of our tickets we will be able to tell. Meanwhile, all hail! Brother Dodson, for thy indignantly virtuous letter. If it could affect our trade, where a good loaf and full weight are so easily ascertainable by our customers, and drive us to make a sort of a living by brewing rotten and medicated ale, Thou wilt not of course allow such a “swindle” to go on for years, as in thy exceeding care of the public thou art perfectly entitled to cast the first stone at us.

Nor if any of us act as a member of a sham Town Board to induce simple people to pay rates iovwhich theyget no appreciable benefit, and have no right to pay, wilt thy vigilance of calling things by their right name be sparing ? All hail, Confrere, and good-by for the present. — We are, &c., Brown & Sutherland.
