THE BURIAL OF THE OLD YEAR.
Bring russet leaves and flowers born To b ossom on tha;bleedin£ thorn, Aud ghastly .shroud of sullied white, Which color lacks, and form aud light, And lay the Old Tear in bis grave"; For he was impotent to sa.Y£.
Sometimes his brief embrace was •warm, But he was faithless to perform ; His promises wo took on trust, But soon he stamped them in the dust. Sad though it be the truth to tell— The Old Year did not treat us well.
We'll bury him without rejjret, Small thanks we seem to owe him ;>yet Perhaps — there is a voice witlrn Whispering — perhaps it were a sia And folly in us not to see That he was not in fault, but we.
Untoward though he seemed, and blind i Indifferent to our wants, unkind, He was not really aoi but meant Our good in every trial sent, As gales and floods and frt>3ts jweigartj The coming of a spring^itie fair. Farewell then, Old Yea* } resfih peace, Oompbdnt o'er thy. remains shall cease-; They say th.o,u. art not wholly fled; ■ In tW«e ejects thou art not dead, $n help, if help tbou cans'i, that.wa And lime may walk in harmony..
