CRICKET NOTES.
A somewhat hurried match was arranged for last Friday between the Gore and Mataura clubs, inasmuch as neither could place any thing like a representative team in the field, Gore especially suffering in thi3 respect. We gave the names of ihe Mataura team in our last issue, but those of Gore we could not, as it was not known then by the Secretary who could get away. However, on Friday at noon five of the Gore C.C. representatives and three substitutes were found to take the place of the eleven. The home team was captained by Maw and the visitors by Martin, they arranging to bat with eight men each rather than let the game fall through. The home team was «ent to the wickets and put together 83 runs, of which Pryde contributed 12? The bowling of Simson and Dcwar was very good, that of the former especially. He got four wickets for nine runs. The visitors then handled tho willow, and succeeeded in putting together 50 runs before the l*Bt man retired. Ocwax batted splendidly and showed good cricket for his 15, while Simeon slosrged »t «verything. giving several chances in the rield for his 21. None of the other batsmen could do an.vthin°- w : th the bowling, which was dead on, and°owing to the rain shot a good deal. Nichol bowled well throughout, securing the most wickf D-«. In the second innings Mataura made 64, of which 29 were contributed by Maw, the next best score being the extras. Gore was unab'e to make the required +8, only putting I!) together. In this innings Nichol again bowled well and so did Brooke. The re'iurn match will be played at Gore early next month, and a good game is anticipated between, these two neighboring clubs.
