THE RIVAL ENTERTAINMENTS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— As touching " Goreite's " letter in last Friday's issue of the Knsigx. " Gceite " seems to be sorely troubled in mind at the idea of the Wyndham Dramatic Club performing here on show night. He is surprised *o see their advertisement, and he deems it absurd that they should presume to, pj&y on the same night as the ChQ.ya.l Saoiaty., It seems t.Q n^o tk,a,t %\tfi. absurdity is on the side o£ \hs Society. They kuew perfectly well thn,t there \y.ou,ld he a,u entertainment on that night, in, the hall, bat xmtil last Mondayweekth©yfond.ly imagined that it would he a, Iqc ,1 a^air, and believing this they did not hc&itato to adveilise their concert i« apposition to mine, considering, no daubt, that their superior talent would, draw the better house ; but, directly they kno v that the Wyndham Dramatic Club is coming, they send forth a piteous wail for sympathy, and iuform the public that ft is the duty of the " musical ai\d. $ghi*thinkuig " portion thereqf to fltfy attend at ' tlie Tempqr^nc^ ]^a,y «v the Bight in question, a^d^e^the. members of the Society discourse sweet music as set forth in tLat. programme—which, ju Goreitcs'a" estimation will prove equally amusing and instawotiYe with the « Bride of Abydos," pe^aps it may to the mem^ej^-b^t X have my doubts ss to-ft-gftyitar. ppA^Qfl of the outside ?s?JP\ W V l^! BBP that on high days and ho^dayg the publio generally are more inclined to theatrical performances of an. amusing character than to conce;^ especially if they have read, go^T reports in the papers Of m play, as in the case gf }h,,i .". B^de of Abydos " Afl4 wm. wen\b,ei v of th,e Society must be of mj : opinion, n,9 shov\ a by « Gorejte's " letter, and by the fa.ct that 6n.<j of. the members i\-rp,te. tfi a gei^en^an eonngoted with the W.Q.C, asking him to, try an d n d get the play : pflat-poned., wSicft last aQtion is, I believe, a wastQ of paper, ink, and, eiiergy, and an unnecessary interference in my affairs. Now, Sir, I consider that the absurdity mentioned by your correspondent " Goreite " li? s in the fact that the Society ia perfectly willing to out another local performance they;!
think cannot hurt them, but when .dapger sfyows ahead in the form of a goodebirilfonV, \ they hang out the white fe:itrier, aad talk & -•*' lot of vapH nonsense abuut the duty of a pbrtion of the public. . . : Mimmed up, it amounts to this : That I ajm carrying out my oiiginal intention of holding an entertainment on >BH6w . night, ajnd the Choral Society have seen fit to hold one in opposition. May I express surprise, and say that Idecm it a&atfr^ that they should '' do so?— I am, &c., H. PCOST. Gore, Nov. 22, 1884.
