As altered* the resolution authorises the Government U> eiilcr into an ngrccment merely for the purchase of the railways. The Government ' have the option up to one week after the next session oO Parliament to buy the railways on the terms stated. The object of the resolution as it now stsuids, Mr Stout expliiiucd, was to make the purchase subject to a bill to be passed next session. The amended resolution, it is expected, will not rccjive so much opposition as the original proposal, which it is almost certain would have been lost. The hon. member for Kutnara (Mr Seddoji) is rather in hot water just at present, Mr O'OaHaghan on Friday gave notice to move on Thursday next for a return stating the number of lines in 'Hansard' which record the speeches delivered by the hon. member for Kumaru during the present session up to date, and the estimated cost of preparing such speeches. Mr Seddon retorted by giving notice of Ms intention to move for a return showing — (I). The number of sitting days held during this session ; (2) the number of full sitting day attended by the member for Lincoln ; (3) the numbar of divisions recorded this session, and the number of occasions upon which the member for Lincoln has been absent therefrom, he not having voted ; (4) the length of each individual member's speeches as reported in ' Hansard,' and the cost to the Culouy of reporting each such speech. •Several lots of land were offered for sale at Invercargill Land Office yesterday, Mr Howard acting as auctioneer. It would seem that the committee are quite content to look on while others work, for not one of them appeared officially at the entertainment. A most influentially and liberally signed requisition is iv circulation calling upon Mr VV. A. Donald to contest the Hokonui riding election at the forthcoming election. The requisition is one of the biggest things of the kind it has been our lot to see, and Mr Donald will no doubt see his way to accede to the request. /'There was a very small attendance at the annual meeting of; the (Jure Jockey Club c died for last evening, when Mr 11. Howell occupied the chair. The balance sheet submitted showed a debit of a few pounds. Some gentlemen present at last night's meeting were of opinion that owing to insufficient public J support last year no meeting should be held this. ,/The people of Mataura evidently value their representative institutions very highly. They were to have met last night to hear ( expressions of opinion from the candidates for the seats on the Town Board, and much fun was anticipated. It will be remembered that the regular election was upset, and hence the need of the present one. Press of business prevented our representative being present, but doubtless the civic eloquence displayed will have its due effect next Wed* nesday, when the election takes place. A meeting of; the Gordon Caledonian Society was held last evening at the Commercial Hotel. In view of the rather small attendance the meeting was adjourned to Friday evening. O. W. Uovvtell— Wanted.
