Mr Murray Smith, Agent-General in London, has telegraphed to Mr fcserviee stating that it is rumored England and .Germany have concluied a convention respecting the Pacific islands. Mr Smith ad- , vises that the colonies sbonld make an United protest against any convention until their consent is given. Mr Service it is understood, is communicating with the other .colonies as to the course to pursue. : New Yokk, Oct. 13, ■ The Republicans have carried the day in Ohio in the choice of candidates for election as President and Vice- President next month. Hong Kong, Oct. 13. The French claim that they obtained a. great victory ovej the Chinese naar J^arg-rson, Tonquin, on the 10th iust. Accounts state that the Chinese General and 3000 of his officers and men were killed. The French loss is set dowu at 20 killed and 90 wounded.
