THE SUITABILITY OF SKIM MILK FOR CALF REARING.
One of the agricultural topics of the day which it is desirable to further most is the inducement of dairy farmers to employ pedigree bulls in their herds, with the object of rearing the whole of their calves, instead of sacrificing them at a few days old so wantonly as they dv at present at a few shillings per head. There is, in fj.cf, veiy little caff. rearing throughout our largo dairy districts, the milk of the cows being considered far too valuable for rea-ly sale or manufacture into butter for formers to leslst the temptation of almo-t giving them away lo the low-class butchers and jobbers. A very large number are disposed of soon after birth, and find their way to the sausage manufactories. While this state of things goes od there is great scarcity of store caitle in the country for gra/.insr purposes, and the supply cornea chiefly from Ireland. This scarcity is accompanied with high prices, the lva on \\i\y grazieY* dtX>law> that, with beef at «»*».. or ]o<l jwpoand, they can make very Ijtljfe profit, their raw material haviug cost, them so.much. money.
