RUMORED BANKI FAILURE.
(Received 3f*y 28, 2.1S p.m.) Melbourne, Maj 26, 10 a.m. A rumor waa widely circulated here on Saturday and Sunday that the London Chartered Balk »f Australasia was about to suspend payment. The newspapers this morning, however, published paragraphs shewing that the bank is thoroughly sound and has a large balance of assets over liabilities. It is further announced that the local manager received a telegram from London on Saturday stating that the bank has declared a dividend of 6 per cent, for the last foalfrjeft'r, and carried L 25,000 to the regerye fimd, J. 0.15 a.m. j There was a considerable rush of depositors I thiß morning to the London Chartered Bank ; to withdraw thtfir balances, bat it is understood that th<i bank is prepared for any emergency, : IX a.m. 1 The rush on the London Chartered Bank was of no importance, and has now ceased. Mora money has been to-day deposited than withdrawn up to present time.
