Mataura Ensign GORE, TUESDAY APRIL 1, 1884. THE DEATH OF PRINCE LEOPOLD.
We are sure that the death of the Queen's youngest son at the. age of .31 < twill 'be; deeply regretted. We say Jt ,;, ; ,hard things about Royalty when it's but when it's in sorrow and death weTfeel some return of the old national instinct that recognises its leaders in Jfcoyal blood. It's a pity the Queen's ,2\sp.ns 4pn't lead more than they do. The i(i young Prince was of weakly constitution, and was minus a layer of skinThis perhapsjhelped to render him subject to epilepsy, of which he died. Not \ a living peasant but is now better than ;i that spa of the Empress-Queen. O.; J ;x-j.:in6h— ••■■•■- . ■■■ -.•♦■=- - >. 3?HE WAIMEA RAILWAY TAX- .;.' /j^.\Mp^fßTJiJß meeting is. to be held in Gore ../jbOsinorrov^ afternoon to discuss the action Plains Railway Company in imposing a ruinous tax upon those jsetfclers presumalSbr benefited bv tlie
line. There .will, we venture to assert, be a larger attendance at this than at. 1 any previous meeting in Gore, and -it seems to us that the most desirable course will be (1) to arrange for a really good legal opinion as to the power of the Company to levy the rate ; and (2) to consider the best mode of approaching the Government with reference to the purchase of the line. These are the main points. Little good will result from passing any bombastic resolutions regarding the action of the Company ; but much good may ensue if resolutions are heartily agreed to in the direction we have indicated. Some time ago we urged in this place the purchase by Government of the line, and so far have seen no reason to alter our opinions. i 111 LI I Mil II II II ■ ■
