CONCERT AT MATAURA.

An entertainment consisting of a concert, ' amateur theatricals, and a ball was held on Friday, 28th' ult., in aid of the Caledonian Society's funds, at Humphries' Hall, Mataura. The attendance was good, and shows that entertainments comprising good performances need only be brought forward in order to ce appreciated. A quartette of local amateurs, accompanied by Miss Mason, gave the introductory overture, which was followed by a song— "The Guardship," by Mr Nairn, whose rendering was marked and truthful. Miss Begg was quite at home in " Sea-shells," and responded to a prolonged encore with "My lodgings on the cold ground." In his usual spirited style, Mr Bree sang "We are all diggers," and was loudly encored, to which he responded by . " The Dear Little Shamrock." The latter . was rendered with more than ordinary expression and taste. " Canary Quadrilles," by Mesdames MacGibbon and McKny, were much appreciated. The next song was by Miss Bessie Begg, and elicited applause. Mr Black, accompanied by Miss Cameron, san^r "Nancy Lee" and received an encore. A solo on the English concertina was played by Mr Begg, sen., the legato parts of which i were -tastefully executed, the audience with some demonstration demanding an encore A Scotch song was very aptly and sweetly rendered by Miss Mason, and was followed by the comic duett " Not a dress to wear," Miss Cameron and Mr Bree appearing to advantage in its execution. " When ye Gang 'Awa, Jamie," was selected by Miss Cameron and Mr Connor, while the "Irish Schoolmaster "by Mr Monson, concluded the concert. After some delay, for which Mr Bree was commissioned to apologise, the farce entitled '•' Urgent Private Affairs " was performed by the Wyndham Dramatic Club, Mr Algie and Miss Cameron sustaining the difficult part assigned them in a manner highly ci editable to amateurs. The entertainment ; so far Jlasted till near 11 o'clock, being a period of nearly three hours. The chair was occupied by Mr Palmer, who announced that the room would be cleared for dancing, and to this most enchanting pastime many devoted themselves wish an energy and vigor much to be admired. Mr Sinclair supplied the music. Possibly LlO may be cleared for the benefit of the institution concerned, and !a ball in aid of Invercargill hospital is announced for next week.
