WAIKAIA.

(Frwnourown correspondent.) A meeting o£ ratepayers was held on Monday, evening last to consider the jC "question b£ nominating five suitable persons for the Licensing Committee for this district for the ensuing year. Mr Stewart •was- Voted to the chair, and explained to the meeting the "business before them. Some very uncomplimentary remarks were passed concerning the outgoing committee whose term of office expires on the 4th iproX.'.aiid after a long discussion the meeting was 'unanimous in selecting. Messrs S. 33. M'Gowan, John Thornton, J. Dickson, L. Roberts, and A. Hnlley as^ifit. aind proper persons to represent the ratepayers on the Licensing Committee for the ensuing year. From the tone of the meeting it was evident that greater interest would be . taken in the election -this year than the previous two years. The advisability of having a polling place at the Upper Waikaia Bush was also mentioned, but as application had made to the Returning Officer for a polling place at Nokomai and refused on account of the expense it would incur, it was not likely that he would allow a poll to be taken at the Upper Waikaia for the same reason. The nomination papers for the five abovenamed candidates were duly signed, and the meeting ■* closed with the usual compliments to the ? clrair. - The weather is still very boisterous and yesterday and to-day rain fell heavily. The Waikaia River is again in high flood and the water is two feet 1 ; deep between the township and Waikaia bridge. The mail coach left for Riversdale this morning but being unable to cross the Muddy Creek the mails were sent on and the coach returned. The nominations for members of new Licensing Committee were received by the Returning Officer, at the Court House yesterday. In addition to the $ frve\(tb.osen as above Messrs A. Christie, J. G-. Brown, C. Robertson, J. Handyside and W. M'lver were nominated. The poll will be taken on the 4th March (Tuesday next)i when a large muster of electors.is . expected. Harvesting has commenced, but operiuoijiions are very much retarded by the in- :,:. clement weathor prevailing. ;• . .Thj9] j 1&$& - an d Progress Committee ( , Wv.e besen advised in reply to the petitibn\re Riversdale-Switzers railway, that the Groverhment do not intend inviting tenders for the second section of the formation at present.
