[Copy urgeritf telegram from Dr MacCarthy.] Arrow, 17th March, 1883.^-To Horace D. Monk, Daatdin.— Send large diarrhoea bottle, Duncan, Roxburgh, through by coach Monday morning without fail.^-G. MAcGiRfcHYJ Rangiora, July 7, 1881. ; SiX, — Having carefully examined your .' Herbal Extract,' I find it to be a skillfully prepared vegetable preparation, possessing the. properties of, the plants from which it is derived in a highly concentrated state, a fact which I have verified by evaporating a fluid drachm placed in a watchgla'S over. a spirit lamp. On weighing' the' result, a. dark green extract, I found the, weight' to be Hj.grs.' On further submitting 1 tbc'extra'ct to analysis I found it to be rich in taunin. In a large number of 'cases of ordinary 1 diarrhoea, as well as in many chronic cases and in dysentery, lime proved it to possess great specific; control, added to. the iausual feature in a; majority of diarrhoea medicines, that it does not subsequently constipate the bowels. I, feel satisfied that from the number of trials I have been enabled to make of it in a somewhat extensive practice, it is a most valuable addition to modern therapeutics. The fol-. lowing cases are taken at random from my note-book :— Case No. 1 : Mra ~~ , West. Eyerton, suffering for two years from chronic; dysentery, which had reduced her almost to a skeleton. After a fortnight's trial not only had the diarrhoea stopped, but she commenced eating meat without pain and the Usual cpncomiSantvprniting 1^ Jntwp months she had gained 181bs, weight, Case No. 2 ; A. G > (mild, aged 5 years. Fortnight: diarrhoea. Was effectually cured on the third day. Case No. 3 : A soldier who had contracted dysentery in India got a small tw«-ounce phial, and was well before he had finished half of it.— Caables DbLacy MacCarthy, M.A., M.8,, kc, Trinity College Dublin. i Royal Park Hotel, Hotham, Victoria, October i, 1882.
