MUNICIPAL MEETING,
A meeting, convened by Mr T. Green, for the purpose o£ considering the advisableness ol forming the town districts of Gore and Gordon into a municipality, was held last night at the Courthouse, Gore. There was a very large attendance, both sides of the river being well represented. Mr T. Green toak the chair and briefly explained the object of the meeting. He thought the towns now contained enough inhabitants and revenue to form one municipality. He then detailed the steps necessary to initiate a municipality. The first step would be to draw up a petition signed by at least one hundred votes. More dignity w«uld attach to a municipal body than to town boards. Another advantage would be that the municipal body would have sole control over the whole of the town. At present the County Council held the most important streets, collected rates for it and spent very little upontnem. There would al§q be quly one rate to p»y under a municipality! The estimated revenue of the Gore Town Board for the year was LBOO and that of Gordon T;200, Very few inland municipalities had a revenue of JJQOQ, ' At present th,e Town Hoard could not spend any money an th« most important roads in the town d'*stricts. He invited discussion. Mr J. Mac Gibbon moved that a committee be appoihted and steps be taken to form the towns of Gore and Gordon into a municicipality. Mr Smaill seconded the motion. Mr Canning moved as an amendment that a vote be now taken. He thought that tfte ohaiyinan had not gone into the matter fully enough. He pointed put that the fears expressed lome time ago by this residents of Gordon, that those of Gore would awamp them, were groundless. The election by each ward of its own councillor would obviate that. Aad the only general fight would be that for the position of Mayor. He also referred ■ to jths endowments which would accrue to a municipality'; lie hoped the meeting would be unanimous in favor of its tbject. Any person voting against it would, he thought, be standing in his oun light. Mr Simson seconded the ameadinent. The chairman saided he failed to see any difference betweeu the amendment and the motion. He then put the amendment affirming the desirableness of forming a municipality. It was .carried unanimously. The chairman suggested th,at the present; was a suitable time for choosing a na»e for the municipality. Mr Mac Gibbon moved that the name be \ Longford. He thought that dropping both the names of Gore and Gordon would tend to sink old differences. . j Mr Fraser seconded. I Mr Canning moved as ah ameudment that the nan?e be ." Gore." Mr Filler seconded _?>;•/> forma. The motion was lost by I? to 17 votes. The chairman suggested that $ committee be.el«cted to carry out the necessary details. Mr Henderson moved and Mr Canning seconded that the following gentlemen be the committee : — Messrs Green, Smaill, Brown Canning, Roy, Henderson, Dplampre, Milnes, Beattie' and .J, Mac Gibbon, five to form a i-iuoru'm, Mr Beattie mttved and Mr Hanson seconded that the two Town Boards te tho committee.
