TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.

Since we last noticed our advance in street architecture three large buildings have been erected in Gore. We refer to Mr Grant's hotel, built by Mr H. W. Potter; the Roman Catholic chapel, Gordon, the contractor for which was Mr Latham ; and Messrs Green and Souness' hoise bazaar, which Mr Peter Hender-on has just finished. A description of the Criterion Hotel has already appeared in these columns and little netd be added now beyond the statement that the buildiDg has been erected in a manner reflecting credit on M r Potter and his late foreman, Mr Geo. Eldred. The exterior is plain but substantial looking ; the interior is carefully designed, the rooms being lofty, and the fittings of the most modern description. We shall in a future issue have something to say about the Catholic Church at Gordon, and leave it in the meantime to notice the horse bazaar of Messrs Green and Soilness, about which most of our farming friends will be anxious to know something. As most of them are aware it is situated in Mersey street, there being an entrance also from the main road. It is of large dimensions, putting in the shade any similar building this side of Christchurch. The Provincial at Dunedin may be a trifle longer, but it is by Ino means so wide, nor has it the conveniences of the one under notice, whose width is 64ft overall and depth 75 feet, not including a covered shed at the rear 60ft x 16ft. These figures give some idea of the dimensions of the building, which is very • lofty and contains a capital run for horses 32 x 75ft. On one side of the " run " are six loose boxes 16 x 12, and on the other a dozen stalls ; and above these on either side are hay lofts, two in number and 16 x75 in measurement. Altogether, the building is for the purpose for which" it was "TJiiii fc~~ v"ery*complete and the advantages it offers for sales of stock are very manifest. In the past considerable inconvenience has resulted from the want of such a building especially in wet w«ather, and Gore is to be congratulated upon having in it a firm able and willing to spend a few hundreds in providing accommodation for the numerous surrounding settlers. The work of construction was entrusted to Mr Peter Henderson, who has made an excellent job throughout. The painting was done by Messrs Taylor and Wright/ and Mr F. W. Burwell was the architect.
