Other weighty business wiJl also be brought'forward. In some parts of the district threshing is. over and the grain on its way to tho market. Mr Jameß Oullen, Otama, threshed ont between 50 and 60 bushels to the acre last week. Although there are about ten mills' in the district farmers complain- that they -oannot Set their grain off their hands. Milner Stephen is now in Dunedin. H e has given one public exhibition. In several cases no improvement resulted, but in two of rheumatics the persons declared the pains had left them under his treatment. ' In one caaejari individual declared he was cured of deafness in the right oar, and that he had spent £100 in Melbourne , in vainly trying doctors' treatment for it. la other cases the patients seemed doubtful about whether they were improved or not. According to the 'Southland News' the knowing ones predict .that the dredge r'e^ , cently imported from Scotland by the Bluff Harbor Board will be a complete failure, as the make is not suitable for the kind of bottom which requires removing in order to deepen the bertbage. At a' preliminary trial the other day one export remarked that for one-fifth of Wjbabjthis plant has cost he would deepen the whole face of the wharf, and guarantee that^ the: work /tvould be performed to the satisfaction of the Board, , or no pay. At the Inyercargill Police Court on Fri* day last Win. The correspondent of the 'Southland Times ' writing from Lumsden says : I do not know at present what arrangements will be made for conducting our Sabbath-school, but it 1 is quite certain that some difficulty will be experienced in filling Mrs/Howell's plape (who is leaving the district). Her loss will also be felt in- many a family, for if there was anything wrong in the , way of, Biokness or' trouble,' Mrs Howell was one of the' first to lend a helping hand. A meeting of the OUgo School Oomtnis- i sioners has just been held to consider a letter reoeived from the Tinder-Secretary of Landau regarding the educatioual reserves at Wynd' ham. The Opmmisajonera applied for power to seil certain reserves, as they found the , land- could not be leased, on satisfactory! terms. A great deal of - correspondence on the subject has passed between the Commissioners and the Crown Lands Department. : In ;the last letter from the Under-Sesrefcary it is stated that the Government cannot assent to offering the land' on immediate and deferred paymentsj as deßired by ( the Commissioners, 1 .until a fair opportunity has been given of realising the intentions of the Legislature in respect of .creating a leasehold estate. A petition was received from settlers at Wynd* ham urging the Commissioners to adhere to their decision, as any attempt to lease the land would only retard settlement. After con* sideration the "Commissioners authorised a reply, from which it appears that they are not convinced by the official utterances addressed to them. Mr E."B. Matthias, recently appointed Clerk of the B.M. .Court;, Gore and Mataura, arrived here on Saturday and. will assume .his dutieß at once. Upon his departure ' from ' Naseby, where he had for several years acted .as, assistant-Clerk to the R.M. and Warden's' Courts, he was, says the ''Mount Ida Chronicle,' 1 presented by a' few friends with a set of sleeve-links and studs (diamonds set in gold) asa tblten of their respect and esteem." Mr'GK A. Wilson made, the,.pr,eeentationi acd' in doing so made a few .appropriate remarks, which were suitably responded , to by the recipient. A number of hi ß friends, and the Bank's constituents, will meet him this morniug, at the Railway Hotel, for the purj: ojbo of bidding him godspeed, and presenting hiic with a purse ef sovereigns, , ■ On Saturday the strength of our local police force was increased by the advent of another constable from Inveicargill— a real live, bobby in white gloves! Whether he is to be permanently stationed bore or not we were uuable!to ascertain, absurdly, atriot reticence being preserved upon thia point, in coc. sequence of our enquiries. However, he was on the spot, and did some service on Saturday evening by running in. an inebriate, 'who; was; subsequently released on bail. . ; Failing to appear before Mr Souness, J. P., yesterday morning the inebriate forfeited his bail, 20s. Sunday was All Fool's Day, and though the jokes, got off at the expense of the credulous and unsuspecting, were very harmless at Gore, a gigantic fraud waß perpetrated by the Duaedin 'Evening Star,' resulting in hundreds of people walking to the Ocean Beach on Sunday, and returning sold. The ' Star ' on, Saturday evening contained the following innooenfc looking paragraph: — "A large sperm whale, about 70ft long, waa stranded on the Ocean Beach, near Lawyer's Jleadi by the last high tide,'* The sequel may be imagined, for' of course there was no whale. We wonder what tip the ' Star ' man got from the Tramway Co ? They have had a housebreaker at Waikaia. At yesterday's Police Court, at Invercargill, John Garshum was charged with having on the 29 tk March broken into and.. entered the dwelling house of John Black, at Kaka Flat, and stolen therefrom a pocket book containing! ■£!» 13lbs sugar, some currants/and other articles to the value of 17s 6d.— The leading witness was a rabbiter, and on the above .date left his house in tho morning to follow his occupation, On returning in the evening he found that the window had been smashed in, apparently with an axe which waa lyiug outside, and the money and provender gone. Witness, in giving his evidence, identified the pocket book, which still had the. £1 note, and expressed regret that '* a photo o' his dochter," whioh was also therej had hot been recovered. He would rather hayehad^it, he said, than the note. Accused waß arrested by the district constable, in a deserted , hut about seVen miles from the scene of the offenoe. Accused was committed for trial at the Supreme Court. , . . ■ , ,
