THE OTAMA LAND JOB.
. .■ -*. ■ • TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — Jt must be very gratifying to intending settlers and friends of settlement to read your able advocacy Of their claims in recent issues of the Ej*Sjgn, i think you will admit that the plan at present adopted of. inspecting, and reporting on waste lands abbufc to be dealt with by Land Boards and others is highly unsatisfactory. Take the Otaina Block for instance. Rumour points to Mr Pearson as the Inspector and reporter of i^s capabilities for settlement. Ndw,. without , doubting his honesty, 1 do not think he has the praotioal knowledge, to deoide what is or is not fit for settlement. I recolleot that a few years ago Mr Pearson was invited by — I think — the Superintendent of Otago to report on the adaptability of Stewart's Island for settlement. The'report was issued, ; showing the Island's resources in glowing flolors— a land where the lazy and ihcompetent bjy pljgh^ exertions could secure a living, 1 and the industrious make a pile. The then editor of th.c 'Qtago fitness' reyiewed the report in the columns qt his paper, and concluded by expressing the opinion that Mr j Pearson' « proper vocation would have. been writing sensational articles for Reynolds' Miscellany. — I am, &o, Chatxon. 22nd, January, 1883.
