The Invercargill Electoral Roll contains 11,773 names, being an increase of 1010 over last year’s. The other Roll.*, in the Southland district are also largely increased. Mr Shanks, the late member, has retired from the contest at Mataura. Mr Richardson and Captain McKenzie, of Matura, last night, received a vote of confidence. The former said if he had been in the Assembly last year he should have supported Mr Hall.

There are eighteen candidates, sixteen for the B.A. degrees, one for Honors, and one for the Senior Scholarship. TIMARTJ. This Day. The tender of Messrs Jones and Peters (L 5,305) for further extension of 300 ft. to the breakwater has been accepted. CAMPBELLTOWN, (BLUER). This Day. The township was flooded last night, through an extraordinary heavy rain. The water was three feet deep in some places. The Mataura Electoral Roll contain 1,300 names. TAURANGA. This Day. A native named Tawhinga was drowned at Ohinemutu on Monday night. He went into a hot bath, on the edge of the Lake Rotorua, and apparently f.dl asleep. He was found drowned the following morning. Soon afterwards a Maori woman was found drowned, in a hot bath near the post office, under similar circumstauces. PATE A. This Day. Bishop Redwood, having directed a collection throughout the diocese for establishing a Catholic Children’s Charitable Institution at Nelson, Ll 9 was subscribed here. Mr G. F. Sherwood is elected first Mayor of Patea. NAPIER. This Day. Mr Sutton addressed the electors, and received an unanimous vote confidence.
