NOTES RV A.M.C. I pnicl my first visit on Friday morning to the Blenheim racecourse in company with that sporting puhlican, Mr. J. Barry. 1 must say those who have the management of the ground deserve greatpraise for having the training ground put in such good order, and it is now everything that a trainer needs. Hero (with that rising young jockey George Frecth up) was sent twice round the plough at a pretty good batter, taking three hurdles on his way beautifully, the more I see of this horse the more I become fascinated with him as being a jumper of no mean merit. He has done nothing yet to Qualify him as as a first-class annual over sticks, and I think that with anything over 9sb lip lie would have but a poor chance amongst good horses, such as Clarence or the Agent. His only win was on the Coast last year, and then amongst inferior cattle. Orlando was sent twice round, taking a couple of hurdles on the way, hut he docs not move like the other horse. M r Howard Dodson’s Little Dick was despatched once round at a moderate pace, and takes the hurdles very nicely for a “little an. He looks as pink as ever, and Ins name is quite a bye-word with local sportsmen. Wheel of Fortune was sent twice round, doing a good serviceable two miles, and went well within herself. This marc is looking really grand since Mr. F. Bolton took her in hand, and lie deserves complimenting lor it Marie Stuart and Greyhound were next despatched to a gentle flutter twice round finishing up at a good hatter. Greyhound very easily settled the pretensions of “ Marie” in a good pipe opener at the finish. Both these horses are in excellent condition —in fact anything that Mr. I. Frcetli has under his able tuition lie turns out fit and well. ... , Mr. I. Frecth s Treason is doing remarkably well this season, and every year he seems to add more to his reputation, for when once hr eders of first-class animals give him a trial, they recommend him to others. He is spoken of as being one of the surest'sires in the province, and his stock (of whom there are many) cannot be beaten, for they are remarkable for being so quiet and good tempered, and no trouble whatever to break in. He, himself, is simply a model of a horse to look at, and I would not he at all surprised if he did not make a great name for himself at the. stud. Catesby, also another of Mr. I. Frecth $ sires, is having a very good run, although but poor in condition, lie is a good looking animal. His breeding is excellent, for lie is half-brother to Guy Fawke’s, one of the earnest animals that ever trod the New Zealand turf, and related to Sir George, the winner of the Wanganui Cup, on the sire’s side, this alone should be sufficient to recommend him to brooders who aie desirous of getting good stock. It is interesting to learn that both Mata and Chancellor arc doing good work, and that they may be well relied on to run prominently at the approaching meeting. Mata's price is quoted at 2 to 1 for the Cup. Surely after winning the Adelaide Cup, beatin" l’rogrcss and a good field besides, lie should have no difficulty about winning the Christchurch Cup. Mata has been hacked for the Cup tor L7OO to LSOO during last week. Lady Emma lias received a considerable amount of support for the G.J.O. Handicap during the past week. The handsome sum of LI,ISO will he oiven at the Wellington Annual races, to be held on February 2nd and 3rd, being an increase ol L2OO on last season. The attendance at the Wanganui Spring Meeting, held on Friday, the 21st was very large. The weather was beautifully fine throughout the whole day.
