CABLE. [REUTER'S telegrams.] LONDON. October 1 7. The announcement made that Arthur O’Connor, M.P. had been arrested, was premature. He heard that a warrant was issued, and escaped to England and is still at large. Serious rioting took place at Mallow, County Cork, yesterday, between the troops and the people. The former fired upon and charged the rioters, several of whom were severely injured before they dispersed. A large meeting under the auspices of the Land League at Limerick attended by a great many-.. people was suppressed by order of the Government, a large force of police being despatched to disperse the assemblage.
Recent speeches and letters of English democrats denounce in strong terms the course now being pursued ley Government in Ireland. The head-quarters of the Laud Leigue lias been removed to Liverp r>L
Arthur O’Connor, who escaped to England, has assumed the direction of the affairs of the League since the arrest of Dillon. A further large number of warrants have been issued by the Irish Executive for the arrest of “suspects,” and many of the local leaders of the Land League have been taken into custody in the proclaimed districts. Riots which occurred at Limerick between the police and people were renewed to-day, when further serious disturbances took place.
CONSTANTINOPLE. October 17. The Sultan has recalled the mission despatched to Egypt. CALCUTTA. October 14. The Ameer's Turkistan army has occupied Herat, evacuated by Ayoub Khan. The British garrisonat Quettah, northern Beloochistan, near the Afghan frontier, lias been largely reduced. MELBOURNE. October 18. There is very little doing in betting. Melbourne Cup quotations are Bathurst and Waxy S tol, Duchess 10 to 1, Trump and Joss 13 to 1, Odd Trick, Sir Mod red and Lord Burghley 20 to 1. Thorpe, a teller in the Bank of Victoria, has been arrested on a charge of embezzling 2,500 sovereigns, which lie h<l replaced with copper coin. The case is not connected with the robbery of £2,500 in notes from the same bank last month.
SYDNEY. October 18. There is now every reason to believe that small-pox is sensibly decreasing in the city and suburbs. [UNITKD IMUMS ASSOCIATION’] WELLINGTON. This D.iy. Mr Stafford .a candidate for Te Aro addressed the electors last night and a vote of confidence was passed. Nominations for the Railway Stakes Handicap. Hurdle Handicap, and Hntt Park Soring Handicap, in connection with the Wellington Racing Club’s Meeting on St. Andrew’s Day, close to-night. Mr Saunders addressed his constituents at Kaikoura Dst night, and expressed approval of the Licensing, Corrupt Practices, and Representation Acts, which redetneed the session from barrenness. He would have voted against Ormond to prevent Grey and Macandrew having any chance to regain power, and he expressed strong disapproval at the restoration of ten per cent, on salaries. He also considered any further increase of the national debt incompatible with the future prosperity and credit of colony ; he was opposed to all protection, and condemned the Council’s action on the Pension Bill ; he advocated Ihc limiting of speeches to a quarter of an hour, except in the case of Ministers and the leader of the Opposition. He held himself free to support any party. A vote of confidence and support was carried by a majority of 8. A telegram to Government state? that 30ine natives are interfering with the settlers in the neighborhood of Cape Eginont lighthouse. The fences were pulled down, and the settlers ordered off the land. Government are making enquiries into the matter.
AUCKLAND. This Day. Garrard is committed for trial for causing bogus names to be placed on the electoral roll. The Wade perjury case is further adjourned for a week. NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. Augustus Kyngden was drowned while crossing the Waitara River at Tikowangi on Monday morning. Me left Captain Armstrong’s at 3 o'clock, about which time his hone and saddle were found. He is supposed to have fallen off his horse whilst fording the liver.
CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. \V. H. Pilliet, a well-known journalist, has aniioiincsd himself as a candidate for Stanmore. Both morning papers strongly condemn the action of the Industrial Association with reference to the Industrial Exhibition projected by Messrs Joubcrt and Twopenny. The public feeling is also against the Association. Mr W. 1\ Cowlissaw addressed the electors at Stanmore last night and received a vote of thanks. W. F. Pearson addressed the Ashley electors on Monday and received a vote of Confidence. KAIKOURA. This Day. Mr Mcllwraith, of Waiau, was yesterday announced as a candidate for Cheviot. DUNEDIN. This Day. By a fire near Milton, a five-roomed brick house was burned down. It was insured for £2.10 in the National.
