HAVELOCK NEWS.

HAVELOCK BOARD OF WORKS. [From Our Own Correspondent.] The Havelock Board of Works met on Monday, October 10th. Present —Messrs. Dorreen, Morrison, Perry, Scott, Smith and Yarker. Proposed by Mr Morrison and seconded by Mr Dorreen —That Mr Smith be Chairman for the ensuing year. Carried unanimously. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was read from tlie Returning Officer informing the Board that the following gentlemen were nominated and duly elected :—Messrs William Dorreen, John Hadfield Smith, and Charles B. Yarker. A letter was read from Mr Fear asking permission to lay water pipes across the footpath. Permission was granted. The following tenders were received for the carriage of about half a ton of iron &c., from Marlboroughtown to Havelock and back : —T. Brown, L 4 10s ; W. Pickering, L 3.

Proposed by Mr Perry and seconded by Mr Scott —That Mr Pickering’s tender be accepted. Carried. The following tenders were received for building a footbridge. Labor only :—D. Davidson, LI 10s ; C. F. Horton, LI 2s : C. Hayden, 19s Cd. Resolved—That the lowest tender be accepted, viz. : C. Hayden’s at 19s (Id. It was also resolved that the Inspector be instructed to get the footpath crushed in front of the Post Office and Town Hall. The following accounts were presented and passed John Davies, LG 13s 6d ;T. Brown, LI 13s ; L. T. Halpine, LI 7s Id ; R. Jones, 17s Gd; H. L. N. Clark, LI 3s Gd. The Board then adjourned. The Havelock School Committee met on Monday evening, October 10th. Present— Messrs A. Mills (chairman), Clarke, Dorrcen, Guinness. Jarvis, and W. Smith. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Sub-Committee reported that after considering the evidence in the late enquiry they are of opinion that the school is beyond the control of the present master and would urge upon the central Board the necessity for a younger and firmer master. Resolved—That the report re. enquiry from the Sub-Committee held on the 4th instant, be forwarded to the central Board. A letter from Miss Davis was received and read, and the meeting adjourned till Monday, November 14.
