OMAKA ROAD BOARD.
A special meeting of the above was held yesterday. Present —Messrs C. Redwood, J. R. W, Cooke, Mills, Kyles, and Watson. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Returning Officer reported that Messrs Redwood and Kyles had been duly elected for Opawa district. Mr C. Redwood was elected Chairman pm trin. A letter was received from Mr MoArtney stating he would not convey a road through section section No 2, Dillon's Point till there was a proper dray bridge over Totara Creek. Mr Cooke proposed that consideration of Mr McArtnoy’s letter be deferred till a future meeting. Seconded by Mr Watson and carried. Mr Burton wrote asking for an advance of L 5 on his contract for metalling the Viiran Valley raod. 'Jf, was stated that ' work to that value had not yet been done, and on the motion of Mr Mills seconded by Mr Watson it was resolved that the Secretary inform him that his request could not be entertained, as there was not sufficient work done. MrJ. Osgood wrote offering to lease a portion of the road at the bend of the Opawa near Dodson's brewery for the sum of L 4 per annum. Mr Mills proposed that Mr Osgood be informed that the Board had no power to deal with the road except under the provisions of the Public Works Act. Mr Kyles thought it would lie better to defer the matter "till next meeting in order that the Chairman might confer with ad joining land owners. Mr Mill’s motion was seconded by Mr Cooke and carried. The following tenders were received for metalling the Alabama Road : —G. Breneliley, (accepted), Ids, per chain ; J. Burton, 17s fid ; .1. Higgins, IPs; A. McC’oll, 245; 'll. C. O’Leary, 2fis 7d. Mr J. 11. W. Cooke was granted permisSa to put a bridge across the drain on the th side of the Alabama Road, subject to the approval of tiie Inspector of Works. Mr Mills proposed the following resolution :—That tiie Secretary write to the Executors of the late Dr Remviek, informing them that Mr R. McLennan threatens to fence a road in Renwiek, known as Anglesea-strcet, stating as his reason for so doing that the road or a portion of it is upon his property. The r. ad is a most important one, bebig the nir n road through the town. The Board cannot undertake to employ a surveyor to rectify mistakes made in laying oil' the town of Renwiek, and would state that they have formed this road in good faith, taking Renwiek survey pegs for their guidance. If these pegs arc placed in wrong positions it must be the duty of Dr. Remvick’s Executors to put the matter right. The Board are given to understand that Mr McLennan is willing to compromise the matter on condition that he receives a fresh certificate of title and compensation for loss of land (about half an acre). The Board would suggest that Mr McLeiian’s offer be accepted, as the cheapest way out of the difficulty. The motion was seconded by Mr Watson and carried. The Inspector was instructed to report to the next meeting upon a culvert mentioned by/Mr Watson in High-street, Rcnwicktown ; to take the necessary stops to have the drain between sections 7 and!), Omaka, cleared ; to repair a box culvert on the Dashwood Bass Road ; and to got necessary repairs done to Murphy’s Cross Road. The following accounts wore passed for paymentW. Tapp, L2 7s ; 4. McDonald, LI 15s; J. Hornby, LS (is fid; Earll and McKenzie, LI 14s fid ; Walker, 7s; C. Watson, 15s ; do. flag signals, half year’s salary, L 7 10s; John T. Rol linson, County Clerk, L 7 10; Returning Officer, L2 2s. The Board then adjourned.
