A heavy shock of earthquake was felt in Blenheim, at about .“>.20 on Sunday morning. The Wallace leaves Hokitikiaon the 1 Ith July for West Coast Sounds. Mails close at Blenheim on Monday, the 4th July. Mr Burnham, the newly appointed assistant master of the Blenheim School, was a passenger by the Napier from Wellington on Saturday. The children attending St Mary’s School, Maxwell-road, separated for the winter holidays on Friday, and will resume their studies in a fortnight. A meeting of creditors in the estate of Main and Roskrudge was held on Saturday. It was resolved to grant the debtors their their discharge. A motion to the effect that it be suspended for twelve months being negatived.
A meeting of the Blenheim United Foot, ball committee will be held this evening for the purpose of selecting the team to play against Awatcrc on the 2nd proximo. \\ e are sorry that our players have had no practice lately oil account of the had weather, lmt trust that they will distinguish themselves in the match.
A great many of the Nelson College boys will arrive here on Friday next by the morning train for their Winter Holidays. This is the first time for the last two years that a team of cricketers or footballers from the Nelson College has not visited us for the purpose of playing against our team. This no doubt is owing to tile fact that Mr Firth the fourth master of the College cannot possibly accompany them to Blenheim.
A return was laid on the table of the House yesterday, to the order of Mr Gisborne, showing the number of population when the census was taken in IS7S, and also of this year. The increase, shown by the latter over the former is 75,2(10. The excess of births over deaths during the three years was 40,708, and there were 17,218 immigrants introduced during the same period.
Judgment was given this morning in the case of Purser v. Clark, in which plailitifF sued for payment of a debt incurred by defendant’s wife, amounting to £lO 17s Id. For the defence it was alleged that a portion of the goods charged for had been bought for use of the daughter, aud his worship took this into consideration, and gave judgment for £7 15s Id, and costs £2 10s.
The Rev. Mr ShirrifTs preached farewell sermons in the Presbyterian Church yesterday, the congregations being large in both morning and evening. In the morning Mr Shirrifls delivered an able discourse from Psalm cxvii, Ist verse lt Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” The text in the evening was from Hebrews xiii, 8, 11 Jesus Christ, the same yesterday and to-day and for ever.” A farewell meeting will he field in the Presbyterian Church this evening, and tomorrow morning . Mr ShirrifFs and family will start for their new home via Picton.
The s.s. Napier left the Blenheim wharf on Thursday, at 1.80, crossed a splendid bar of 7 feet of water, and arrived in Wellington at S.BO p.m., making a smart seven hours passage, from wharf to wharf. She left again for Blenheim at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, and had hard southerly wind across the straits, was off the bar at 1.30, crossed at 4, and arrived at Blenheim wharf at 0 p.m. Passenger, Mr Burnham. The Napier on this occasion came in at a channel about (500 yards to the" south of that at which she went out, aud Captain Fisk is of opinion that this will prove a ,rood and lasting channel after the freshes have subsided. The freedom of tlie press is frequently too much for the tender-feelings of certain members of the legal fraternity.
