From an extra issued by 7 our Picton contemporary we learn that the Penguin left Picton at 2 o’clock on Friday morning. After steam ing down the harbor about six miles land was observed a few yards ahead, and before the vessel could be checked she had grounded on the beach, the steering gear being carried away. There was no noise or confusion, in fact, many of the passengers thought on waking that the steamer had arrived at Wellington wharf. Subsequently the Torea attempted to get the Penguin oft*, but without .success. The bench where she went ashore is composed of loose gravel and sand and only the stern of the vessel was aground. The cargo was shifted astern on Friday and 40 tons of water pumped into the vessel, but even then she did not move. On .Saturday the llinemoa succeeded in getting her oil'.
