HAVELOCK.
[From Our Own Correspondent.]
December 21). The concert and farce that were got up for the benefit of the widow of the late Henry Chant, passed off very successfully on Monday night. The Hall was crowded, tlie audience evidently appreciating the efforts made by the different performers. The programme consisted of two operatic choruses, songs, duets, and one recitation. After an interval this was followed by a farce entitled, “Chopsticks and Spikuns. ’ The rendering of the different characters by the ladies and gentlemen reflected great credit on all, there being six performers, and the successful and natural manner in which the character of the mother-in-law by Mrs Jronelash was sustained, rather took the audience by surprise ; that of “Maude” being taken by a lady well known, and ot whom it is sufficient to say is, in all her undertakings, niifuil. At the conclusion of the performance, and immediately before singing “God Save the Queen,” Mr McGlashan, on behalf of the performers, thanked the audience for the encouraging support and sympathy evinced on behalf of such a laudable object, and Dr Riley, on behalf of the audience, expressed the entire satisfaction they felt. 'Hie sports on Monday were well contested, and the day was fine, but being engaged the greater part of the day in connexion with the evening's entertainment, fuller particulars must he deferred. Last night (Tuesday) we had a violent thunderstorm, hut this morning the weather is all that can lie desired. The steamer Pelorus lias left this morning with a lot of passengers to attend the regatta and sports at Grail Bay to be held to-dav.
