'Phe Compensation (’curt drought its sitting to a close yesterday with the following awards:—ln Mr Fell's case FT,OOO and Foil costs were awarded, the Government undertake not to use, sell, or let for wharf purposes the river frontage taken from Mr Fell, for a period of 14 years : in the Wesleyan ('liurch Trustees case, FlOdOand costs F2o : and in Pr Horne s FI 70, (subject to a point of law) each party to pay his own costs. Mr Fell claimed FI 0,800. ; the Wesleyan's L 1,270; and Pr Horne. FOOD. There was another claim by Mr Sinclair who claimed for a piece of land over which Mr Fell had a right-of-way, which was settled out of court. M r Sinclair’s claim was FHnO, and he got FI To. The awards will, wc believe, be regarded as satisfactory. Mr Curtis acted as Assessor tor the Government in all the cases. Mr Solauders was Assessor for Mr Fell, -Mi 1 George Henderson for the \\ esleyan's. and Mr Horton for Pr Horne, the Chief Justice presiding. A full report will appear in our next isuc. A train will leave Picton for P.lcnheim on Foxing Pay 27th inst. at one o’clock p.m., returning in time for the departure of the steamer “ Ringarooma. ”
The Secretary of the Literary Institute informs us that the Library and Heading Room will he open from 7 till !) o’clock tlu.v evening, but will he closed to-morrow. The line imposed on Mr J. K. Dodson for non-attendance as a special juryman in the case of Dodson v. Redwood was remitted.
The funeral of the late Father Pczant will take place on Sunday next at Picton. A train will leave Blenheim at 10 o’clock in the morning, returning from Picton at n.UO p.m.
The nomination for Nelson Suburbs takes place on the 3rd January and the poll on the 11th. Mr Collins and Mr Harley are in the field : Mr Collins will in all probability be returned. At All Gee's Art Union yesterday, Mr Draper was the winner of the beautiful model of the man-of-war to which we have referred in former issues. The other two prizes were won by Mr Gibbs.

The Blenheim Volunteers willjcommence Class Firing on Monday, the 27th instant, at six o’clock in the. morning, and the Firing will be continued on the two following days commencing at the same hour.
The Hon the Commissioner has decided to allow Sunday hours to lie observed at all Telegraph Ofliceson Monday next 27th inst. (Boxing day). Special wire Stations will arrange to man Special wires the usual hours viz., S p.m. to I a.in.
St. Marvs Schools, .Blenheim.-—The examination of these schools was conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday last, as usual by S. F. Muller* Ks<| J.P. in the presence of the Rev. Father Sauzoau, and several visitors. A full report and the prize list * will appear in our next issue. At a meeting of creditors in the estate of John Maealister, wheelwright &e held yesterday Mr G. S. Stcnlionse was appointed trustee of the estate and effects of the bankrupt. The liabilities were set down at F 470 and the assets at L7O. The eminent shipping firm of Money, W'igram, and Co. have laid on their A I clipper ship Northumberland for Wellington direct to load wool. This will offer a splendid opportunity for shippers’ of wool from this district. At the 11. M. Court yesterday, Thomas Ross and William Randall were charged with being found at eleven o'clock the previous night in the stable of Messrs Sharp and Bickering without lawful excuse, and were each sentenced to 21 days’hard labor in Wellington gaol. A meeting of creditors in the estate of Fdward Ireland, laborer, was bold yesterday. 'flic liabilities wore set down at .1*71,S and the assets nil. No one appeared .anxious to be frusteo in this promising estate. One gentleman signified that a j guarantee of X 7 might secure his services, i but the guarantee was not forthcoming and the meeting lapsed without anything being done. Mr George Stevenson is having a totalisator made which will be brought into use at the forthcoming Sports, and will, doubtless, he well patronised, The artificer who lias constructed the machine is F. Moorlt, ;iml he is evidently a very clever hand at that kind of work, ft is made of totara, polished, and is very perfect in all its details, resembling very closely (hut in many respects superior to it), the totalis-, ator which Mr Hill had on the Blenheim race-course at the lest meeting. Ine annual tea meeting in connection with a St, Andrew’s Presbyterian Church will he held on New Year’s Day. After toa there will he a public meeting, when addresses will he delivered by ministers and other friends. .During the evening a choir will sing a selection of anthems. Special New Year sermons will he preached at the Church on Sabbath, January 2nd, at the usual hours. Collections will lie made in aid of the Church Building Fund. Our local butchers are. making a fine show of meat iu anticipation of Christmas and the confectioners oiler a tempting display of cakes and fruit. Many of the shops are tastefully decorated with ferns and evergreens, and the usual preparations are being made for the observance of this festive season according to the time-honored custom of all Christian countries. The weather promises to he delightful in this favored region, and a pleasant holiday will no doubt he en joyed by a large majority of people on Boxing Pay.
An application was made to His Honor the Chief -Justice yesterday, in Chambers, for a new trial of the libel ease Griffiths v. .Johnson, at Nelson at tiie ensuing sittings, which commence on the 7th January. By the Pules it appears that three days’ notice of action must be given, and as the Nelson sittings were set down for commencement on the IPth instant, the application could only he granted by consent. The defendant not consenting no order was made. The new trial w ill therefore have to he postponed until the next April sitting at Wellington, or the June sitting at Nelson, presuming that the application is granted, of which, however, there can scarcely be a doubt.
Monday next (Boxing Day) will be ob- j served as a bank and general holiday.
