TRIAL or lIAItVESTETO AIAC'HEvK!t Y (Melbourne Lfmlfr, Dec 4, ISSO.) A trial of harvesting machines exhibited at the recent .show of the National Agricultural Society was he d on Monday, at Air John Roman's farm, I’ascocv e. All of the reapers and hinders catalogued pu.s in an appearance, hut from .sonic unexplained cause only one of the reaping mao-nines and five of the mowers exhibited at tne shoe came to trial, five of the number heimr imported. Messrs. M Lean I’.ros. sent to trial the ADCo -mick stria" hinder, the Al'Cormick wire binder and the Leering string Linder; wliile the Walter Wood string binding machine was sent by Messrs .fas. AlM']wan and (Jo., and the Osborne string hinder by Messrs Lord and Hughes. A start was made soon after two o clock, and eacli machine had to cut and hind two acres. Some difficulty was experienced in getting a fair commencement, owing to the fact that when the roadways were cut through the crop the hay was left on the ground, which had the effect of impeding the progress of the machines. The crop was a thick one of green oats, badly laid in several places, and the ground was rough, while the wimlincss of the weather added considerably to the difficulties of doing good work. As the reaping and binding machines are intended to harvest ripe grain working them upon green oats is a very severe and scarcely a fair lest. The Walter Wood machine, which was awarded the first prize, did excel'ent work from the commencement, fiuishi ig in one hour and fifty-eight minutes, although it had been delayed through an accident to another machine. The cutting was clean and the binding scenic, while the sheaves were well separated from each other, and delivered gently in even rows. The second prize was awarded to the Osborne machine, which was tried first, as a string binder, but owing to the gearing getting out of order, did the whole of the work with wire. Jn this ease the cutting and binding were we I dm e, and the time occupied was one hour thirty-eig it minutes. The system of separating the sheaves adopted in the Osborne machine is not so complete as in the others, the bundles tending to hang together after being hound, and in a long crop there would he some danger of shaking out the grain from the heads being brushed past the elbow of the binding arm. Very fair work, however, was done at the trial, and the machine deserved the second place. AI ‘(Jormick's wire hinder, which obtained the third prize, made veiy good work, although some delays occurred, which extended the time occupied in competing to two flours thirty-three minutes. The cutting was done well, and the binding, separating and delivering the sheaves were managed in a very satisfactory manner. It is probable that tin's machine would have obtained second prize if the delays had not extended the time to a greater length. The ADCormick string hinder, which obtained fourth prize, was very unfortunate. To its lot the heaviest and most badly laid part of the ground fell, and it was fitted with a sickle knife which is only .suitahle for cutting ripe grain. In addition to these drawbacks the horses bolted with the machine lie fore the beginning of the trial, damaging a portion of the binding gear, and the result was that the cutting was done imperfectly, rmd the number of delays which occurred extended the time considerably beyond that occupied by the other competitors. The binding was managed, however, very satisfactory, and the sheaves were separated mid delivered efleetviely by the very simple apnlianccs adopted. If a plain knife had been used instead of a sickle there, is no doubt that the machine would have shown to much better advantage. The Deering string hinder had also i;ie misfortune to lie fitted with a sickle knife, and the result was that a,'cer the (it it round it withdrew from the con -. -;t, being unable to out the green oats.
