Sale at [ two o'clock. The Picture Uallery at Kwart’s J full in connection with the Wesleyan Bazaar, will he open to visitors this evening till 10 p.m. A splendid collection of curios, Ac. are to ; he seen, and are well worth the price of i admission, which is Is. I A considerable quantity of the plaster ceiling in the room occupied by the police at the Covernment Building fell on Thursday afternoon, but fortunately did not I -strike anybody. The ceilings in all the rooms urgently requires looking to, some very narrow escapes from serious accidents have occurred from time to time of late. Messrs fell Bros. & Co. the local agents of the manufactory have now in view one of Wood's Perfected Automaton String Binders. This machine lias gained first honors at both the Sydney and Melbourne exhibitions, and lias beaten all competitors wherever shown. As a labor saving implement it seems to us perfect and well win thy the attention of fanners. We stated in our last that the girl who stood second in order of merit at the competition for the Vogel prize would receive a prize. Mr Seymour, Chairman of the Board, who suggested that the girls should he asked to compete for the \ ogel prizes, has purchased two works for the girls who stand second and third in the order rf merit at the examination. Tlie.se will le Board prizes. We are glad to see Mr Seymour taking this interest in the pupils attending the schools, and we hope to sce Committees following such a good example.
His Honor the Chief Justice arrived here at noon on Thursday, and proceeded with the Supreme Court business. A report of what has been done -up the time of our going to press to-day appears in another portion of our columns. As wo anticipated the substitution of a wooden roof for the plaster ceiling of tbe Court House, not only to the safety of tbe public, but has also improved the sound, or as our evening contemporary calls it the “acrostic” properties of the room.
Mr Smith, tinsmith, &e., Market-street is making some very useful articles which can be used as watering cans or portable shower-baths. The method of their construction and the manner in which they are filled by pressure appears to he very ingeniously contrived, and they will he found useful in many households which are not provided with baths of the ordinary kind.
Special attention is called to the pricelist of the liodnnow Manufacturing Co., of Boston, published in these columns. All those wishing to secure an excellent and correct timekeeper are recommended to address themselves to this old and reliable firm. No further evidence of the invariable good quality of their manufactures will be required beyond tbe following facts : The firm was established is 184!), and since then have gained prize medals at the Exhibition of London, Paris, Vienna, etc., for excellence of manufacture. They are appointed, by warrant, watchmakers to the Queen of England, Prince of Whiles, the Emperor of Russia and the Boy of Tunis. When the vacancy for the electoral district of Nelson Suburbs in tbe House of Representatives occurred through the lamented death of Mr Andrew Richmond it was thought probable that Mr Curtis would be brought forward with an excellent chance of being returned. It has since been rumored that M r Curtis will shortly be called to the Upper House, and the coming man for the Suburbs is said to be Mr Arthur Collins. The Colon!.-:/, of the 14th instant says :—“ The Returning Oilicer having received the writ for this election yesterday has fixed the nomination for Monday, the 3rd January, and the polling day for Tuesday, the 11th. In this issue Mr Collins announces that ho will hold his first meeting on Friday evening next, when he will address the electors at Richmond. Mr Collins has taken action thus early after receipt of the writ that he may address the electors in the several centres prior to Christmas, as lie does not wish to interfere with the holidays. Immediately he ascertains that he can secure the use of suitable rooms in the several localities, Mr Collins will invite the electors of Suburban North, Stoke, Ranzau, &c., to to meet him that he may explain his views j on current topics.” Air Collins has been in the House before and made an excellent member. It is men of the character, social standing, and scholarship of Air Collins whose presence is wanted in the House. 'l'lie call of Mr Curtis to the Upper House i will, we are sure, be regarded with general approval throughout the Uolony.
This N.Z. Thnr.i thus describes Tulii’s entrance into Court last Thursday : “Three minutes to thehalf-hoarTuhi, closely guarded, was brought into the Court by side door, and walked to the dock in the centre of the Court. All eyes were immediately directed on the prrsoner, who seemed to bear the scrutiny with equanimity. He did not appear to be greatly concerned, and deliberately surveyed his surroundings as though he were an ordinary visitor to the Court. He was dressed in white moleskin trousers and an old double-breasted tweed coat. He is slightly above the medium height, is well built, has regular and—for a Maori— somewhat pleasing features, the face being wholly hairless and untatooed. Me has a very high and peculiarly shaped head, the upper part being almost the form of a cone. At the entrance of the Judge, he stood up, a warder standing by his side n the dock.”
J/ollowaj/'n Pllln, — I The Female’s Friend.— Soon as the human functions are disordered they should he rectified. It is a hopeless delusion to leave the malady to its own course. A few appropriate doses of Holloway’s Fills at the proper period will prevent disease from extending and affecting more distant organs. Their primary action is upon the blood, stomach, liver, kidneys, and bowels. Their secondary action strengthens the nervous centres. No drug can he at once so harmless yet so antagonistic to disorders affecting the other sex. ff he most perfect reliance may ho placed upon their purifying, regulating, and renovating virtues. They may he safely taken by females at any age.
