LONDON. December 9. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is .£14,000,000. At the -wool sale to-day, 4100 bales were offered. There was more enquiry, but the demand was principally speculative. 10,000 bales have been withdrawn from sale since the opening of the auctions. A terrible colliery explosion occurred to-day at Prygraig (nic), which has resulted in the death of over ninety miners, who were in the pits at the time of the explosion. Hews is to hand from South America that the Chilians in large force have landed at Pisco on the Peruvian coast, and are rapidly advancing on Lima, the capital. December 10. The IrishLeaguehas now instituted courts for the settlement of disputes between landlords and tenants on land questions. CALCUTTA. December 10. The latest telegram from Allahabad reports that all feverish symptoms have now left the Marquis of I’ipon, but he remains in a very weak condition. CONSTANTINOPLEDecember 10.. The Porte lias addressed a circular note to the Powers, calling upon them to restrain Greece from pro-
ceecling with the increase of her armaments, and to ask her if she will accept the compromise proposed in October last, namely, that the territory to the south of Janina and Larissa should be ceded, but not those towns themselves. The Porte adds that if Greece replies in the negative a rupture must ensue.

WELLINGTON. Monday. The Australia has arrived at Auckland from ’Frisco, with the English mail and a number of passengers. She left ’Frisco on the 21st November. 'Hie official telegrams to-day report everything quiet on the West Coast. The prisoner Tulii was brought up this morning charged with the murder of Miss Dobie. After the jury was empanelled the Grown challenged two jurymen, and the prisoner challenged four. Some discussion then ensued between Mr Forwood (prisoner’s counsel), and the Judge, and the case commenced. Three witnesses have now been examined, Mrs Simson acting as a ciieek on Baker as Crown interpreter. Twenty-two jurymen were absent or asked to be excused when the case of Tuhi was called on this morning, some from illness, and some having left the Province. Two tramway engines and four cars were shipped per d’e Anau to-day for Dunedin to assist in replacing those burnt there.
DUNEDIN. Monday. At I’annookburn some boys were playing in an old sluicing ground, when one named Manson got a pick and started picking under a hanging face, when amass of earth suddenly fell, crushing him to pieces. A lad named Alfred Kisslingbury was shot accidentally by bis brother when out rabbit shooting. Mr Alexander cables that he hopes by to-morrow to obtain leave for Oroube and Slight, when lie will telegraph definitely whether the team is to leave on the 4th or 11th of January. CHRISTCHURCH. Monday. John Wilson, a man 07 years of age committed suicide last night by cutting his throat. Financial troubles are said to have been the cause. NEW PLYMOUTH. Monday. Yesterday afternoon a woman was brought from Omata to the hospital, but when the cart arrived she was found to be dead. Deceased appears to have been taken ill on Thursday, and no medical aid was sought till yesterday when it was too late. 'The woman is the wife of Mr John Greig, late of Hokitika, and as she was previously in good health it has been considered necessary to hold an inquest on the bod v.
