The Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court commenced this morning. John Watson, attempted suicide, pleaded guilty, and sentence was deferred until to-morrow. Charles William Ellison pleaded guilty to stealing wearing apparel ; sentence deferred till to-morrow. Stephen Baker, charged with attempting to wound, but the prosecutor not being present, after hearing other evidence, a verdict was returned of not guilty, and prisoner discharged. Adam Leitch, pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property ; sentence deferred. Charles W. Ellison, charged with housebreaking, pleaded not guilty, and after evidence was taken the Judge directed the jury to acquit prisoner, this was done, and prisoner discharged. From news received it is supposed the reef at Stewart’s Island turns out to he a myth, and the miners are returning disgusted. The case of Tulii, the murderer, will be taken on Monday, and would have been taken to-day but bis solicitor said there was no chance of thejease being concluded by Saturday night, consequently The hearing was adjourned till Monday next. David Collins, charged with horse stealing pleaded guilty and sentenced was deferred till to-morrow.

Acting under the recommendation of the Royal Commissioners on Local Industries, itis understood to be theintention of Government to offer bonuses for the production of the following articles at reasonable prices : —Beet sugar, linseed oil, sulphuric acid, and starch. superseded by a fortnightly service, and a further regular steam service be instituted between Tonga and Fiji. H. M. schooner Alacrity returned yesterday from Fiji, after a long absence on a surveying tour among the islands. Her crew first learned of the murder of Lieut. Bower and several men of the Sandfly at Solomon Islands, upon opening some Auckland newspapers. The Alacrity is expected to remain at Auckland two or three months to refit. CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. At Akaroa, Mrs Scarborough, wife of a prominent resident has been committed for trial at the Supreme Court for aiding and abetting her niece in throwing boiling water over William IT. Rossiter. The Government have agreed to close all public offices in Canterbury on the 16th December, that being the anniversary of the establishment of the Province. There was an immense attendance at Coles’ Circus yesterday.
