Marlborough Times. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1880.

The very dim light which our Evening Illuminator sheds on current events is very misleading : like a feeble lamp in a thick fog, it just makes darkness visible- What a poor guide it is to follow was forcibly shown by what transpired at a special meeting of the Borough Council on Thors- j day last for the purpose of electing an j auditor in the room of Mr. Millington who 1 had resigned. Now, some time ago the \ Esprcsu informed its countless readers tha t i

Mr. Millington had censed to he a burgess, and was therefore to he an auditor, adding, in cdl'cct, that the Town Clerk knew nothing about the Act which he might he supposed to understand. To have a fling at the down Clerk was, doubtless, a congenial task to the .writer, hut it happens as a matter of fact that the Town Clerk does know, and did know at the time of Mr Millington’s appointment, what the Act says and does not say a great deal hotter than the editor of the “Illuminator,” or, presuming him to he “inspired,” than the legal luminary who furnished the information. A reference to the Act yesterday proved that Mr Millington was not disqualified, and but for his resignation would be Auditor now. So much for our contemporary’s knowledge in tins matter (concerning which he is about as well informed as lie is on other matters), and of so much weight is his attack on the Town Clerk for his “ignorance.” Truly, to use a rather vulgar, but expressive phrase, “ The hoot is on the other leg.”
