HAVELOCK.

[prom our own correspondent.j October 2Gth. A meeting of the Havelock Education Committee was held in tlie Boys’ Schoolroom on Monday evening. Present — Messrs Alexander (chairman), Clarke, Dorreen, Guinness, Horton, and Owen. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and tlie resolutions were passed :—That Messrs Tv- -nd Dive be written to with regard to the necc-sary repairs to the Boys School. That the Central Board he requested to vote the sum of L 4 towards the necessary repairs to the Boys’ School. That the schoolmaster be requested to open the school one halfhour before school hours for the purpose of ventilation.

The weather lately lias been very boisterous, and for the season of the year, very cold. As lam now writing one of tlie high hills at tlie hack of Mr Jervis 5 at hern hlafc is covered with snow. The mean temperature is now very low, and a uood fite is quite as necessary to us here just now as it was in the depth of winter. There are certain urgent repairs that require immediate attention at the l>oy3 School. During the late heavy rains the water lias come through the roof, and there lias been an extensive leakage, so much so as to cause a large portion of the room to he unfit for use as the flooring is literally covered with water. The local Committee would have had the work done hilt unfoitunately there are no funds in hand. A short time ago the schoolroom was painted, a fence erected, and other necessary work attended to. At a meeting of the local Committee on Monday evening it was resolved to apply to the Central Board for a sum of L 4 to enable the work to be done, failing which a public subscription will have to be raised. The health of the children will probably suffer if this matter remains any longer unattended to. Reductions in the Government Service appear to he the order of the day. One of tlie employees here in the telegraphic Department has received a very polite official letter, stating that his services will not be required after the 30th November. This, viewed in a strictly personal point of view may he deemed a matter of regret as Mr Robert M’lvor (familiarly known as “Bob”) lias been very obliging, and is a general favorite here. Weather permitting, there will be a cricket match played here on the Ist November next, between the Havelock and Pelorus Clubs. On Friday, the sth, Mr Vanuatu intends giving a concert in the Town Hall for his own benefit, and certain it is he is deserving of support. He has on two previous occasions given his services, once in March last for the purpose of getting a new harmonium for the Church, and again in August, when a concert was got up for a widow and her family whose husband was lost at sea last winter.
