WAIRAU ROAD BOARD.

Wednesday, Sept. Ist. The Board met at two o.clock. Present— Messrs Ward (in the chair), Avery, and Goulter. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE, &C. A letter was read from Mr Nicholson, calling attention to the bad state of the Waihopai road from the crossing at Leefield to Strouvar. It was resolved that the Inspector should visit the locality and report on the state of the road, and that in the meantime L 5 be expeuded in necessary repairs. Mr W. M. Stace wrote to the Board in reference to water tables and culvert on the Delta road, complaining that a much larger flow of water than hitherto will in future run through Iris yard and suggesting that the Board should either find him the means to protect a well sunk in the lower part of the ground, or empower him to do it at an estimated cost of L 3. It was resolved that Mr Stace be informed that the Board did not feel justified in entertaining his application. It was resolved that Mr McColl’s tender for the office of Impounder of cattle for the Waihopai district at L 6 per year and driving fees he accepted. It was agreed that the question of compensation in the matter of Fabian’s road, Oaamalutu, should stand over until replies from all the parties concerned who have been written to shall have been received.

inspector’s report. Mr E. Maddock reported that lie had examined the Waihopai road from the big rise above Valleyfield to the point where the road is already formed. The distance is about 40 chains, the greater part of which is very soft in winter, and it would be much improved if formed. The big rise requires lowering five feet and the cost of the whole work is estimated at LSO. The Inspector has visited the Onanuvlutu with a view of allowing the road leading to Mr Thoms’, but in consequence of some of the pegs having been knocked out he was unable to show the exact boundaries. The Inspector did not see Mr Sutton but believes him willing to remove the old fence complained of by Mr Thoms. Messrs Tapp and Rowe decline to go on with their contract for forming the Waihopoi road at 13s per chain, and the Inspector desires to know if the Board will accept the next lowest tender of 15s fid per chain or invite fresh tenders. Mr John Higgins has commenced his contract for forming part of the Dog Point road and is pushing on with the work. Mr Angus McColl i* pushing on with his contract for metalling the Dog Point road, and Mr T. Hopgood’s contract on the Brookby road is finished. It was agreed that tenders be called for the work referred to in the Inspector’s report as being required on the Waihopai road, and that Mr Neville’s tender at 15s fid per chain be accepted in place of Mr Tapp’s tender at 13s 6d which lie had not proceeded with.
