HAVELOCK.
[From Our Own Correspondent.] August 23. The Kaituna cart, bridge which is approaching completion, consists of four spans of 25ft each, with three piles to each pier. The timber-used is brown birch. There are winged walls at each end of the bridge, and the work reflects great credit on the contractors, Messrs Akersten and Freeman. The engineer, Mr McGlashen, has expreesed himself perfectly satisfisd with the manner in which the contract is being carried out.
There was a heavy gale here on Saturday. It began to rain and blow with a vengeance about half-past one p.m., and the force of the wind was such as to blow out the front of an unoccupied building adjoining Mr Bruce’s All Nations Hotel, lately used by Wyinond and Co., from Nelson. It also lifted the Cemetery gate off its hinges. The mail left here on Saturday morning but was unable to reach its destination until Sunday morning, and the passengers were obliged to remain at- Mr Taylor’s at Mahakipawa all night. Among them was the Rev. F. T. Opie, who officiated three times in Havelock, morning, afternoon, and evening, to good congregations. In the afternoon lie held a Sunday School service and baptized four children. The population here is increasing and the birth rate is about six per month. There was no business of sufficient importance to bring the Warden from Picton on Thursday last. The next regular sitting of the Court will not take place until Thursday, September 3rd.
